PRP vs GFC for Hair Loss: Which Treatment Is Right for You?
PRP and GFC both use your own blood to treat hair loss. Learn how they differ in preparation, comfort, sessions and results — and how to choose.

If you are noticing more hair on your pillow or a widening parting, you have probably come across two popular treatments: PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and GFC (growth factor concentrate). Both are minimally invasive, both use your own blood, and both aim to wake up weakening hair follicles. So what is the difference?
What is PRP?
PRP is a three-step procedure. Blood is drawn from your arm, spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich layer, and that plasma is injected into the thinning areas of the scalp. Platelets release growth factors that support follicle health and blood supply.
What is GFC?
GFC takes the idea one step further. Using a dedicated kit, platelets are activated so they release their growth factors, and the resulting concentrate is separated from most cells. What is injected is a purer solution of growth factors rather than whole platelets.
PRP vs GFC at a glance
| PRP | GFC | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Your own blood | Your own blood |
| What is injected | Concentrated platelets in plasma | Activated, concentrated growth factors |
| Comfort | Mild discomfort | Often reported as more comfortable |
| Typical sessions | 3–6, monthly | 4–6, every 4–6 weeks |
| Downtime | Little to none | None |
| Best for | Early thinning, skin rejuvenation | Early–moderate thinning, transplant support |
Which one should you choose?
Both treatments can work well when the cause of hair loss is identified first. Hair fall linked to thyroid problems, iron deficiency or hormonal imbalance needs that issue treated too — otherwise any injection therapy will underperform.
- Choose based on the stage of hair loss, not marketing claims.
- Expect a course of sessions, not a one-time fix.
- Combine with nutrition, medication or laser therapy if your trichologist advises.
- Track progress with standardised photos every 6–8 weeks.
At Periwinkle Clinic, every hair-loss plan begins with a scalp examination and, where needed, blood tests — so we treat the cause, not just the symptom.
